Zen Meditation Practice Community
Thursdays 6:00-7:00pm $5/person

What Is Zen?
“Zen” is a word that is often used carelessly in popular culture. In reality the practice of Zen, derived from the teachings of the historical Buddha (Dharma), is about realizing our true nature. Through meditation and study in community we awaken to the intimacy of the everyday and experience first-hand the interconnection of all living things.
Zazen
Meditation is the heart of Zen practice. By sitting quietly and attending to the body, breath, and mind our limiting mental habits and preconceived notions of how things should be begin to drop away. What is left is a clear awareness of how things really are. It’s that simple.
Tradition
Bowing, bell ringing, lighting incense -- these simple acts help us set an intention for our practice and demonstrate respect for the Zen tradition and those who practice with us (Sangha). To bow is to make oneself vulnerable and let go of ego. Bells and gongs introduce us to a form of communication beyond language. When we light incense we dedicate the benefits of our practice to all beings. How does ritual encourage us to pay attention?
Commitment
In the past few years, meditation has become a popular practice for relieving stress and has benefitted many individuals. When we add traditional forms and philosophical study in community to a daily meditation practice, we move beyond self-help. Our practice becomes a vehicle for compassionate engagement with the world and a force for healthy, creative altruism.
The Zen Practice Community @ Hatchery Hill Yoga
All are welcome to join; there is no need to have an established meditation practice or to identify as Buddhist. Each meeting will consist of 30 minutes of seated meditation followed by dharma discussion (reading and discussion of a short text or a brief exploration of a particular aspect of practice). Drop-ins are welcome, but to receive the full benefit and support of practicing in community weekly attendance is encouraged.
